Milan 1880: Who?

Who proposed the Milan resolutions? And who were the people who voted in favour of them?

This is what we know:

  • The Congress was planned and organized by a committee created by the Pereire Society, a group that was against sign language.
  • The Conference was attended by 164 delegates from various countries.
  • Out of these 164 delegates only one, James Denison from the USA, was Deaf.
  • Participants came from at least seven countries in Europe: Italy (87), France (56), UK (8), Sweden (3), Belgium (1) Germany (1).
  • There were five delegates from the USA: James Denison, Edward Miner Gallaudet, Reverend Thomas Gallaudet, Isaac Lewis Peet and Charles A Stoddard.
  • The conference president was Abbe Giulio Tarra.
